Chief Garry Park Neighborhood Unites and Stops City’s Plans to Relocate C.A.T.
SPOKANE, WA - Today, a Coalition of residents, workers and business owners in the Chief Garry Park Neighborhood released a statement on the announcement by the City of Spokane that they would not be moving forward with the proposed purchase of a property on E. Springfield for the relocation of Compassionate Addiction Treatment.
“The residents, workers, business and property owners of the Chief Garry Neighborhood are greatly relieved by this news. As we said from the beginning, we know that so many in our entire community are plagued with addiction and we greatly support individual’s efforts to get free from it. But those efforts must not be at the cost of the safety and well-being of the children and families in our neighborhood. The reality is – the Chief Garry Park Neighborhood is already home to six service providers, including the TRAC shelter. The City of Spokane’s own Comprehensive Plan calls for an equitable distribution of these services. The hardworking families in this neighborhood simply could not absorb any more.
We are grateful to Mayor Brown and the Spokane City Council for listening to the lived experiences of those in our community and changing course. Further, we agree wholeheartedly with Mayor Brown that 'constructive dialogue is essential for progress,’ and we look forward to being part of the discussion, from the beginning, moving forward.
We are grateful to all the members of this Coalition and neighborhood for uniting and making their voices heard! We still plan to hold our Emergency Community Meeting tomorrow at 5 pm (2025 E. Trent) as an opportunity to thank the community and our elected officials for being a part of this dialogue and to continue the conversation on the issues that deeply impact our neighborhood.

KHQ - Chief Garry Residents Push Back Against C.A.T.
STOP C.A.T. AND SAVE THE CHIEF GARRY PARK NEIGHBORHOOD
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown and the City of Spokane are trying to move the Compassionate Addiction Treatment (C.A.T.) sobering center and behavioral health services to the middle of our neighborhood (1819 E. Springfield Avenue).
We know that so many in our community are plagued with addiction. It’s no secret that it’s an issue that is facing our entire city, region and country. We support an individual’s efforts to get free from addiction; but those efforts must not be at the cost of the safety and well being of the children and families in our neighborhood.
- There has been no public involvement or dialogue in this decision.
- We want transparency from our City leaders
- This proposal puts an undue and inequitable burden on this neighborhood which already is home to SIX service providers.
- This proposal creates an unsafe environment for those who live, work and attend school in our neighborhood.
The hardworking residents of the Chief Garry Park Neighborhood deserve better! We deserve to have our voices heard! The complete lack of transparency by our elected officials and undue burden on our neighborhood is unacceptable and must be stopped.
Join our coalition of residents, workers, non-profits, and businesses and make YOUR voice heard.
